Plant identification
Photo-based plant identification is unreliable for safety-critical decisions. Never eat a foraged plant, mushroom, or unknown garden volunteer based on online photos alone. Consult a qualified local botanist, poison control, or your regional extension office before consuming anything you cannot identify with certainty.
Pesticides and chemicals
Read product labels in full before use. Pesticide regulations differ by region. A product legal in one country or US state may be restricted in another. Local extension offices can advise on what is approved for residential use in your area.
Allergies and skin reactions
Many common garden plants — including some we recommend — can cause allergic reactions, photodermatitis, or skin irritation. If you have known plant allergies or are new to a species, wear gloves and long sleeves until you know how your skin responds.
Children and pets
A number of popular ornamental and edible garden plants are toxic to pets and children. We try to flag the obvious cases. If you have curious dogs, cats, or toddlers, verify a plant’s safety with the ASPCA’s poisonous plants database before bringing it home.
Local regulations
Some plants are invasive in particular regions and may be regulated. Before planting anything ornamental, especially in areas adjacent to wild land, check whether the species is listed as invasive locally.
